William Penn Memorial Fire Tower

Neglect, Damage
Repair and Restoration

The stairs before restoration
Broken windows allowed pigeons and rainwater to invade the interior. The mixture of pigeon droppings and rainwater created an acid which destroyed the steel stairway that leads to the observation deck. The spiral staircase that leads to the upper level, though structurally sound, is severely corroded.  In the summer of 2000 the ruined steel stairway was replaced by Bachman Iron Works of Reading, the same firm who fabricated the original stairway back in 1939 when the tower was constructed.

The concrete railing on the observation deck was heavily damaged by decades of wind and weather. The tower was enclosed in scaffolding and the damaged railing was repaired and a steel safety railing was installed.

All of the original windows have been replaced. The stone work has been repointed inside and outside.

The copper dome on the top of the tower and the windows on the fire lookout level have been replaced.

The heavily corroded metal work on the fire lookout level has been cleaned up and painted.

The spiral staircase at the top of the tower was in very bad condition, and unsafe. Bachman Iron Works of Reading replaced all the treads and risers, removed the corrosion and painted the steps.

This is a good beginning, but there is still a long way to go to return the tower to its original condition. More than anything Pagoda-Skyline Inc. needs money to get the job done. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to volunteer some of your spare time to this effort, please contact Pagoda-Skyline Inc. at the address and phone number below.
